About Mary
At my core I am a storyteller and I strive to create stories that help people to feel.
I love to collaborate and have an uncanny ability to see the whole picture. I am a performer, director, choreographer and writer of drama, comedy, musical theatre, film and television, Shakespeare, and anything else I can get my hands on.
I grew up in sunny Orange County, California where I attended The Music Room School of Performing Arts for 13 years. I also attended the El Modena Arts Academy, where I had the opportunity to perform in a dance/theatre piece that I adapted from Pyramus and Thisbe. That was where my love of writing for stage began. My senior year I received the Disney Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre, which felt extra special to me since I am a huge Disney fan. I went on to train at The College of Santa Fe. I love the culture and the sunsets in New Mexico. There I received my B.F.A in Theatre, with a musical theatre concentration. After graduation I went on to perform regionally all over California
In 2010, my life changed. I was cast in a beautiful world premiere of a three person autobiographical play. This was my first opportunity to play a really meaty dramatic role in a straight play and I could not have been more thrilled. The run was beautiful and the director was also the writer. The play was called Sarah Was Mine. The director and I worked together to get the show into the Fresh Fruit Festival at The Cherry Lane. We emotionally willed it all the way to the Cherry Lane Theatre in New York. This marked my New York theatre debut and a move to New York a few weeks after we closed.
(We are currently in pre-production talks to turn Sarah Was Mine into a film.)
NYC has become home to me and my beloved ‘Katrina’ rescued kitty, Betty. For almost a decade, I have immersed myself in the New York theatre scene. I have been seen performing in many off-broadway shows. I have found myself, my choreography, my writing and my direction in many new works. I enjoy helping to structure theatre from its beginning stages.
I have also helped to develop the Secret Theatre Academy. I teach musical theatre, drama, and dance to kids ages 5 - 18. I helped to spearhead a fabulous production of Gypsy that included some of the academy children, and equity performers. (Myself included.) There I choreographed and was in a production of Hair. James Rado himself came to some of our rehearsals and called my choreography fantastic. I also directed/choreographed two very successful production of Seussical and Annie.
